Embeddable calendars, also sometimes called calendar widgets or calendar plugins, are a fantastic tool to engage your audience, increase event attendance, and provide a beautiful overview of upcoming events directly on your WordPress website.
An embeddable calendar is a dynamic tool that allows website visitors to interact with your events, scroll through upcoming dates, and even RSVP or subscribe — all from your WordPress website.
Unlike static images or links, AddEvent’s interactive calendars allow users to view event details, scroll through dates, and subscribe to updates. When embedded on your WordPress site, the calendar can sync seamlessly with your Google Calendar, Outlook, and Apple Calendar, etc.
Embedding an Addevent calendar directly on your website offers your visitors a space to view all of your events, as well as the opportunity to subscribe to your embeddable calendar so those events then show up automatically on their personal calendars. Plus, AddEvent supports all popular calendar services such as Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, Apple Calendar, Office 365, and Yahoo Calendar.
One of the best features of AddEvent’s embeddable calendars is that they double as subscription calendars. This allows users to subscribe directly from your website or through other sharing methods, taking a simple calendar plugin and giving you another communication channel.
A subscription calendar works like a live feed of your events. When a user subscribes, they receive real-time updates in their personal calendar whenever they make changes or add new events. This is particularly useful for businesses that need to keep clients, customers, or followers informed.
If you’re familiar with calendars like “Holidays in Your Country” on Google Calendar or work calendars shared among colleagues, then you’ve already encountered subscription calendars. These calendars ensure that your subscribers always have the latest event details at their fingertips.
You can also customize the subscription process by collecting information from subscribers, which is ideal if you run a membership program or want insights into who is following your calendar. If you prefer not to offer the subscription option, it’s easy to remove the subscription button when customizing your embeddable calendar.
There are plenty of ways to share your calendar with your users. Here are some of our favorite ways to get started.
AddEvent’s embeddable calendars work seamlessly with WordPress and other popular website builders. Embedding a calendar on WordPress is easy—just follow these steps:
Sign up for an AddEvent account if you don’t already have one. Choose from our free Hobby plan or one of our paid plans, which come with lots of additional features. Learn more about our plans on our plans and pricing page.
In the AddEvent dashboard, create your new calendar (or, for Hobby users, edit your Main Calendar page) and customize it with details like name, description, time zone, and display settings. You can make this new calendar as simple or custom as you want.
Input all your upcoming events in the AddEvent dashboard, including all the relevant details like date, time, and location. You can always add new ones later! Remember to fill out the event details section so your guests know where and when the fun is happening!
Now that your events are added to your calendar, it’s time to add your events calendar to WordPress!
(You can easily add or update events in the future, and they will automatically appear on your WordPress event calendar plugin. This is the advantage of using a dynamic, embeddable calendar over a static image!)
Scroll to the Embeddable section on your Calendar page and select the Embeddable calendar (traditional calendar view) or the Embeddable events list (interactive event list view).
You can use the customize button in the upper righthand corner or upload a custom template to tailor the embeddable calendar to match your WordPress website’s branding and set your calendar settings.
For this blog, we’ll guide you through the steps to embed a full calendar widget. (But don’t worry: the process is the same for embedding the embeddable events list!)
When your embeddable calendar plugin looks exactly the way you want it, click the button at the top of the page to view the different embedding options.
These include embed code (also referred to as HTML code), URL, and iFrame with a URL. Copy the code and head to your WordPress site.
Once you’ve logged into your WordPress dashboard, open the block editor for the page you want to add your embeddable calendar to.
Add a new block, and drag over “Custom HTML” to add your HTML block. From there, paste your calendar embed code. Don’t forget to hit “Save”.
That’s it! You have taken a simple calendar plugin and created a fully integrated calendar! Your calendar will now be live and fully functional on your WordPress site. You can always update events in AddEvent, and they will automatically sync to your website.
Embeddable calendars are available as part of AddEvent’s paid plans. If you’re already on the free Hobby plan and want to explore all of our embeddable features, reach out to us at trial@addevent.com to try it for yourself.
