Learning Objectives:

This EFORT Educational Webinar will focus on surgical management of ankle fractures. The last decade a number of new concepts have emerged ranging from a more liberal use of posterior approaches to address the posterior malleolus, the use of retrograde tibiotalocalcaneal nails to bridge the joint and retrograde fibular interlocking nails, of different methods of stabilising the distal tibio-fibular syndesmosis and the repair or not of the deltoid ligament to more aggressive weight-bearing rehabilitation protocols.

 The objectives of this Webinar are: 

• Define the nature of current challenges in ankle fracture surgery.
• Describe the advantages and limitations of different surgical approaches in this anatomic region.
• To explore the solution intramedullary nails offer to ankle fractures especially of the elderly or in patients with compromised soft tissue envelope.
• To analyse the value of different techniques to stabilise the syndesmosis and the deltoid ligament.
• To assist contemporary surgeons in navigating between emerging alternative strategies, approaches and fixation alternatives for ankle fractures.
