National Religious Freedom Day commemorates the signing of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. The act, authored by Thomas Jefferson, codified religious freedom in Virginia and served as the template for the First Amendment to the US Constitution and its Free Exercise Clause.
Since 1993, January 16 has been designated by Presidential proclamations and the US Congress as Religious Freedom Day.
