Swāmī Vivekānanda (1863-1902) was a monk, philosopher, author, spiritual teacher, and the chief disciple of Rāmakṛṣṇa Paramahaṃsa. He founded the Rāmakṛṣṇa Maṭh and the Vedanta Society. He was a key figure in the introduction of Hindu spirituality to the Western world and gaining international recognition of Hinduism as a major world religion.
He was born on Pausha Krishna Paksha Saptami, the seventh day of the waning moon of Pausha month. On the Gregorian calendar, it was January 12th, 1863.
