Structural Insights into TRP Channel Gating: Visualizing a Polymodal Signal Integrator
The capsaicin receptor, TRPV1, is a heat-activated ion channel that is modulated by numerous inflammatory and pro-algesic agents. This ability to serve as a complex polymodal signal integrator underlies the channel's contribution to both acute and persistent pain. Elucidating structural and allosteric mechanisms underlying such polymodality is key to understanding the function and therapeutic potential of TRPV1 and other members of this diverse ion channel superfamily.
