Program: Second Thoughts, a Public Goods Reading Club (in Common Room VC)
"I wantto cultivate the capacity for second thoughts, by which I mean the stanceand the competence that makes it feasible to inquire into the obvious. This is what I call learning." — Illich, 1989)
Article/content/chapter we will read:
Short section on "Author's note" (to get a small sense of how Illich thinks)
Quick context on the article and why we would like to examine it:
In a world trying to get your attention (think attention as a resource), Henry would like to contrast thiswith Illich's notion of silence and it's relation to the commons. This canbe part of his larger way of questioning the "certainties of our time". This pairs with KB6 "empty block". How should be think about private/public spaces and how it relates to an older notion of the commons, on ownership/control?
Here is the link for you to join the group andannotate the reading (this can be both sync or async experience! If you can't make it to this call, still feel free to check it out!): https://hypothes.is/groups/19aap72M/illich-reading-club
Henry, our host, has compiled a tutorial on how to use the annotation platform here:https://hackmd.io/@hzoo/BJAic-DHq
We will reserve the first 15 minutes for silent group reading time and start the discussion and annotation at 7pm EST / 11 pm UTC.
